Mastering Cardiac Output Monitoring

For many years the perioperative management of surgical patients had been based in part, on static pressure measurements such as central venous pressure (CVP), pulmonary artery occlusion pressure (PAOP) and systemic blood pressure. The availability and improvement in cardiac output monitoring and flow based measurements is changing the way perioperative care is delivered. With more emphasis on flow based care and a wealth of clinical literature to support surgical outcome improvements, an understanding of perioperative cardiac output monitoring and the available technologies becomes increasingly necessary.

In this workshop world experts in the field will guide the participants through the understanding of the cardiovascular physiology during surgery, explaining why maintaining a normal pressure is not enough to guarantee an adequate oxygen delivery and the improvements this can bring. They will be taught the “how”, “what” and “when” of cardiac output monitoring. It will be explained “how” to measure cardiac output, “what” to do with measurements and the “when”, by explaining which clinical strategy is best suited to different contexts of perioperative optimisation. The most up to date evidence will be provided and the newest available technologies will be presented.

The afternoon will be dedicated to a hands on demonstration of current technologies in which the participants will be divided into small groups and will be able to touch and try different cardiac output monitors. Their use will be explained through interactive sessions in front of the monitor and using “real life” case based discussions.
